Pavel Kolesnikov: Live at Honens 2012

The Telegraph (London) describes Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov’s playing as having “brilliance, but also a caressing, almost sly intimacy”. Kolesnikov, who was named Honens Prize Laureate in 2012, made his recital debut in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 2008 and has since played both as soloist and collaborator throughout Russia, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Recent and upcoming engagements include festival appearances at Spoleto Festival USA, the Ottawa International Chamber Music and Banff Summer Arts Festivals (Canada), the Plush Festival (United Kingdom) and with orchestras including the Calgary Philharmonic and Regina Symphony Orchestras, l’Orchestre National de Belgique, the London Philharmonic and Russia’s National Philharmonic Orchestras. Thanks to his Honens win, he will soon make debuts at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, London’s Wigmore Hall and New York’s Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. Kolesnikov studies at Moscow State Conservatory with Sergey Dorensky, at London’s Royal College of Music with Norma Fisher and at Brussels’ Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel with Maria João Pires. He calls London home.

Carl Nielsen String Quartets, vol. 1. Danish String Quartet

This admirable coupling by the Young Danish String Quartet of Carl Nielsen's string quartets in F minor and E flat major bolsters the notion that Danish performers are still best suited to represent Nielsen's uniquely Danish compositional voice. Both works here are youthful compositions written in a style fusing those of Grieg and Brahms. The Young Danish String Quartet rips into the big theme of the F minor quartet's opening Allegro non troppo ma energico with rhythmic power yet still express the following Un poco adagio's warm heart with yearning lines and lushly balanced sonorities. With lucidly articulated lines and effervescently buoyant rhythms, the young Danish players' interpretation of the E flat quartet's unique combination of a pastoral tone with learned counterpoint is wonderfully poised between the natural and the intellectual.

A New Venetian Coronation 1595. Gabrieli Consort & Players and Paul McCreesh

A New Venetian Coronation, 1595, is a speculative reconstruction of the liturgy for the solemnization of Marino Grimani as Doge, which occurred April 27, 1595, in the Basilica of San Marco. It is also a vivid re-creation of the first CD by Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort & Players, A Venetian Coronation, 1595, which was recorded almost 25 years earlier. Evoking the festivities of a late Renaissance celebration, the album opens with tolling bells, crowd noises, firecrackers, and the instrumental pieces that might have accompanied the Doge's procession, such as the Intrada by Hans Leo Hassler. The Coronation Mass follows, sung in Gregorian chant and augmented with polychoral works by Andrea Gabrieli and Giovanni Gabrieli, and punctuated by shorter pieces by Cesare Bendinelli, and Cesario Gussago. One can easily imagine the pomp and ritual of the event from hearing this typically ad hoc Venetian mix of sacred and secular music. However, sticklers may be quick to point out that several of Giovanni Gabrieli's publications are dated from 1597, so their use here probably involves some guesswork of the original composition dates. Furthermore, because there is no surviving Venetian trumpet music, the generic fanfares by Bendinelli are used as substitutes. Taken on the strength of the performances, which demonstrate the diversity of styles in Venice and the varied purposes for which music was used in San Marco, this album is a delightful look at history with a highly imaginative presentation.

Volodos plays Mompou

Arcadi Volodos is one of the world’s best pianists, celebrated as a “genius” and the “new Horowitz” for the unique combination of outstanding virtuosity and profound and expressive musicality.

Volodos devotes his new CD to the hardly known Catalan composer Frederic Mompou. He believes that Mompou’s solo piano works are of outstanding quality and open new worlds. The fact that Mompou’s music is hardly known is a key to success for this CD. It can only reveal its deep und unique quality in the magnificent interpretation of Volodos. The music of Catalonian composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987) is almost completely unknown today. Unjustly so, in the opinion of Russian star pianist Arcadi Volodos, who has devoted his new solo CD to this remarkable musical personality.

Carrying on the tradition established by his Spanish colleagues Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz, Mompou's works are subtle and delicate, mysterious and intimate, with a shimmering Impressionist palette. Mompou's role models are always in evidence in his many piano pieces: Chopin and Scriabin, Satie and Debussy. Yet in quiet, unobtrusive fashion, Mompou evolves a musical cosmos entirely his own from these models: his music is a true discovery.

- Diapason d'Or

Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956. Anne Applebaum

In the much-anticipated follow-up to her Pulitzer Prize-winning Gulag, acclaimed journalist Anne Applebaum delivers a groundbreaking history of how Communism took over Eastern Europe after World War II and transformed in frightening fashion the individuals who came under its sway. Iron Curtain describes how, spurred by Stalin and his secret police, the Communist regimes of Eastern Europe were created and what daily life was like once they were complete. Drawing on newly opened East European archives, interviews, and personal accounts translated for the first time, Applebaum portrays in chilling detail the dilemmas faced by millions of individuals trying to adjust to a way of life that challenged their every belief and took away everything they had accumulated. As a result the Soviet Bloc became a lost civilization, one whose cruelty, paranoia, bizarre morality, and strange aesthetics Applebaum captures in these electrifying pages.

Charity Case: How the Nonprofit Community Can Stand Up For Itself and Really Change the World. Dan Pallotta

A blueprint for a national leadership movement to transform the way the public thinks about giving

Virtually everything our society has been taught about charity is backwards. We deny the social sector the ability to grow because of our short-sighted demand that it send every short-term dollar into direct services. Yet if the sector cannot grow, it can never match the scale of our great social problems. In the face of this dilemma, the sector has remained silent, defenseless, and disorganized. In Charity Case, Pallotta proposes a visionary solution: a Charity Defense Council to re-educate the public and give charities the freedom they need to solve our most pressing social issues.

Proposes concrete steps for how a national Charity Defense Council will transform the public understanding of the humanitarian sector, including: building an anti-defamation league and legal defense for the sector, creating a massive national ongoing ad campaign to upgrade public literacy about giving, and ultimately enacting a National Civil Rights Act for Charity and Social Enterprise

Captivating ... Engaging ... Mr. Foer writes in these pages with fresh enthusiasm. His narrative is smart and funny and, like the work of Dr. Oliver Sacks, it's informed by a humanism that enables its author to place the mysteries of the brain within a larger philosophical and cultural context. -- New York Times

Man Booker prize 2013. The longlist

We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo
Bulawayo’s first novel is an expansion of her Caine prize-winning short story about Zimbabwean street children. Her narrator, Darling, escapes to Amer- ica, but finds that material wealth doesn’t translate into happiness.

Unexploded by Alison MacLeod
In 1940, Brighton family the Beaumonts are expecting a German invasion any day, while down the road “enemy aliens” are detained. One of them – an exiled “degenerate artist” – will come to change their lives. Due out in September, Unexploded is the followup to The Wave Theory of Angels, which combined medieval theology and contemporary physics.

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
This eclectic, meditative novel from Ozeki, also a film-maker and Zen Buddhist priest, weaves many different stories around the discovery of a Ja- panese teenager’s diary washed up on the shore in British Columbia in a Hello Kitty lunchbox. Was she a tsunami victim? A suicide? Zen wisdom may hold the answer ...

Almost English by Charlotte Mendelson
Mandelson's previous novel, When We Were Bad, was nominated for the Orange prize in 2008. In her fourth book, out in mid-August, 16-year-old Marina leaves the cramped London flat she shares with her troubled mother and elderly Hungarian relatives for a traditional English public school. Is she fated to be an outsider at school as well as home?

Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw (Fourth Estate)
Aw's tale of four Malaysians looking for opportunity and reinvention in Shanghai explores individual lives and loves in the storm of global capitalism as the world’s centre of gravity shifts to the east. Guardian reviewer Amin- atta Forna called it “The Way We Live Now for our times”. Aw’s 2005 debut, The Harmony Silk Factory, won the Costa first novel award.

The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibín
Tóibín, who has been shortlisted for the Booker twice before and recently won the Costa novel award for Brooklyn, is one of the most established writers on the list. In this slim, surprising novel the Virgin Mary gives her per- spective on life as Jesus’s mother.

The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri
From the hugely acclaimed – and bestselling – Indian-American author, The Lowland is not out until September. A story of two brothers from Calcutta, what the publisher assures us is an “epic” story follows one of them into the militant far-left Naxalite movement. The group's violent campaign to em- power India's landless divides the brothers with tragic results.

TransAtlantic by Colum McCannTransAtlantic, which begins with the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to County Galway in 1919, began as a short story in the New Yorker in April 2012, and developed into a longer work in three parts. It takes in historical vignettes from the Great Famine and the Good Friday agreement of 1998. Theo Tait in the Guardian called McCann, best known for Let the Great World Spin, “a very gifted, charming writer; in full, rhaps- odic-onrush mode, he is hard to resist.”

The Marrying of Chani Kaufman by Eve Harris
A debut novel, The Marrying of Chani Kaufman draws on Harris’s own ex- perience of north-west London’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community. Nine- teen-year-old Chani has never had physical contact with a man, but is ex- pected to marry a stranger. Soon buried secrets, fear and sexual desire emerge in what the publisher Sandstone describes as “a story of liberation and choice”. Although Sandstone is a small operation, its tracklist includes The Testament of Jessie Lamb by Jane Rogers, which won the Arthur C Clarke award – and was also longlisted for the 2011 Booker.

The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan
A debut novel set in a small town in the aftermath of Ireland’s financial col- lapse and told through a chorus of 21 different voices, The Spinning Heart has been compared to Synge and Patrick McCabe.

Harvest by Jim Crace
Veteran author Crace has said that this atmospheric tale of a vanished Eng- land will be his final novel. It focuses on a nameless village undergoing en- closure, whereby “the sheaf gives way to sheep” and peasant farmers are expelled from land once held in common. Crace’s descriptions of hard- scrabble lives in the ever-rolling seasons are both mythic and particular.

The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton
Following her bewitching 2009 debut The Rehearsal, the second novel from New Zealand wunderkind Catton, out in September, is a dizzyingly ambi- tious doorstop of a book. Set in the 19th-century New Zealand goldfields, it takes in astronomy, ghosts, unsolved crimes and much more.

The Kills by Richard House
The Kills is a crime and conspiracy novel told in four books which begins with a man on the run and ends with a burned body. If this sounds rather conventional, don't be misled: House is also an artist and film-maker, and the narrative of The Kills extends into short films, spinning off the written plot in what the author describes as “footnotes”.

"One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit," Harry G. Frankfurt writes, in what must surely be the most eyebrow-raising opener in modern philosophical prose. "Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted." This compact little book, as pungent as the phenomenon it explores, attempts to articulate a theory of this contemporary scourge--what it is, what it does, and why there's so much of it. The result is entertaining and enlightening in almost equal measure. It can't be denied; part of the book's charm is the puerile pleasure of reading classic academic discourse punctuated at regular intervals by the word "bullshit." More pertinent is Frankfurt's focus on intentions--the practice of bullshit, rather than its end result. Bullshitting, as he notes, is not exactly lying, and bullshit remains bullshit whether it's true or false. The difference lies in the bullshitter's complete disregard for whether what he's saying corresponds to facts in the physical world: he "does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are."

Фуко говорит: «Итaк, от обрaзa Сокрaтa, который пристaвaл к молодым людям с вопросaми, призывaя их позaботиться о себе, и вплоть до христиaнского aскетизмa, учaщего, что aскетическaя жизнь нaчинaется с зaботы о себе, перед нaми рaзворaчивaется долгaя история понятия epimeleia heautou (попечения, зaботы о себе)».

Manet - Portraying Life. Phil Grabsky, Ben Harding

This eagerly awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Edouard Manet. Spanning this enigmatic and, at times, controversial artist’s entire career Manet: Portraying Life brought together works from across Europe, Asia and the USA.

Manet’s portraiture has never been explored in exhibition form, despite it forming around half of his artistic output. He painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artistic figures of the day, giving life not only to his subjects but also to Parisian society. The exhibition consisted of more than 50 works; including portraits of his most frequent sitter, his wife Suzanne Leenhoff, luminaries of the period; Antonin Proust, Émile Zola and Stéphane Mallarmé, along with scenes from everyday life revealing Manet’s forward-thinking, modern approach to portraiture.

The film revealed exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of the exhibition’s preparation, which normally go unseen by the public, and interwove a detailed, superbly crafted biography of Manet and 19th century Paris. Host Tim Marlow and special guests looked at the craft of one of the all-time great artists, the ‘father of modern art’.

Written on Skin. George Benjamin

Written on Skin is an opera by the British composer George Benjamin. It was premiered at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2012, and received its British premiere at the Royal Opera House in London in March 2013; Benjamin conducted for both of these premiere seasons.

The libretto by Martin Crimp is based on a legend of the troubadour Guillaume de Cabestanh; the story is also repeated in The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio. The action takes place in 12th-century Provence. The wealthy Protector pays the Boy to create and illustrate a manuscript about his family. The Boy and the Protector's wife Agnès are attracted to each other. The Protector murders the Boy and forces Agnès to eat the Boy's heart. Agnès commits suicide. 'Angels' comment throughout on the action from a modern-day perspective.

The success of the opera in performance has motivated the Royal Opera to commission a new full-length opera by Crimp and Benjamin, to be premiered in 2018.

The Gambler. Sergei Prokofiev

Filmed in the historic Mariinsky Theatre in 2010, it stars celebrated Russian tenor Vladimir Galuzin and bass Sergei Aleksashkin, and is conducted by Valery Gergiev. It is of fundamental significance that under Gergiev s baton the Mariinsky Orchestra and opera company have performed all of Prokofiev s symphonies, concerti and operas on numerous occasions. Georgian director Temur Chkheidze, who also presented the Mariinsky s last production in 1996 and directed the opera with critical success at the Metropolitan Opera in 2001, gives a fresh look to Prokofiev s first opera. Set in the fictional town of Roulettenburg in the mid-19th Century, 'The Gambler' is a four-act opera that displays the dramatic highs and lows involved in the game of chance. At the centre of the story is Alexei, who is in love with The General s step-daughter, Pauline. All of the characters fall victim to the temptation of gambling, each one consumed by the obsession and greed that drives them. Vladimir Galuzin, who plays the role of Alexei, is indisputably one of the world s leading dramatic tenors, known for his unrivaled stentorious voice and extremely vivid characterisations of some of the most demanding roles. A Mariinsky soloist since 1990, he is much in demand internationally, performing regularly during the last two decades as a guest of most of the world s most prominent opera houses, concert halls and festivals. The role of The General is played by Russian bass Sergei Aleksashkin. Three-time recipient of the Golden Sofit, St Petersburg s most prestigious theatre prize, Sergei has been a Mariinsky Theatre soloist since 1989, singing title roles in Mussorgsky s 'Boris Godunov' and Glinka s 'Ruslan and Lyudmila'.

Pathfinders: The Golden Age of Arabic Science. Jim Al-Khalili

For over 700 years the international language of science was Arabic. In Pathfinders, Jim al-Khalili celebrates the forgotten, inspiring pioneers who helped shape our understanding of the world during the golden age of Arabic science, including Iraqi physicist Ibn al-Haytham, who practised the modern scientific method over half a century before Bacon; al-Khwarizmi, the greatest mathematician of the medieval world; and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, a Persian polymath to rival Leonardo da Vinci.

Jim Al-Khalili OBE is a theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster. He is currently Professor of Physics at the University of Surrey, where he also holds the first Surrey chair in the public engagement in science. He was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for science communication in 2007, elected Honorary Fellow of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and has also received the Institute of Physic's Public Awareness of Physics Award. Born in Baghdad, Jim was educated in Iraq until the age of 16 and it was there, being taught by Arabic teachers in Arabic that he first heard and learnt about the great Arab scientists and philosophers. He has long championed the influence of Islam on science and hopes to bring attention to the rich Arab heritage in our understanding of science today.

Whether intelligence is largely determined by genetics or environment has long been hotly contested. Nisbett, a University of Michigan psychology professor, weighs in forcefully and articulately, claiming that environmental conditions almost completely overwhelm the impact of genes. He comes to this conclusion through a careful statistical analysis of a large number of studies and also demonstrates how environment can influence not only IQ measures but actual achievement of both students and adults. (People often overachieve when appropriate incentives are in place, Nisbett argues.) Nisbett builds a very strong case that measured IQ differences across racial, cultural and socioeconomic boundaries can easily be explained without resorting to hereditary factors. The result is a very positive message: schools, parents and government programs can have a huge impact if they take the right, which are not necessarily the most expensive, steps. Without those steps, he says, the current role of socioeconomic factors is frightening, with economically disadvantaged children largely condemned to failure. Although Nisbett relies heavily on statistics to document his claims, he does so in a manner accessible to general readers and uses a thoroughly appealing style to engage them throughout.

The New York Times - Delectable...a tartly amusing, all too accurate guide to the new establishment.
The Wall Street Journal - Hilarious and enlightening.

Storia di un anno. Il tempo del bastone e della carota, 1944 / The Fall of Mussolini (1948) was written during the brief period between his rescue by the Germans in September 1943 and his execution by Italian partisans in April 1945. Here the Duce recounts his last year in power and the coup d'etat that deposed him.
