More than 630 million Chinese have escaped poverty since the 1980s, reducing the fraction remaining from 82 to 10 percent of the population. This astonishing decline in poverty, the largest in history, coincided with the rapid growth of a private enterprise economy. Yet private enterprise in China emerged in spite of impediments set up by the Chinese gov­ernment. How did private enterprise overcome these initial obstacles to become the engine of China’s economic miracle? Where did capitalism come from?

Studying over 700 manufacturing firms in the Yangzi region, Victor Nee and Sonja Opper argue that China’s private enterprise economy bubbled up from below.

Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety. Eric Schlosser

Nuclear bombs must be handled with the proper care, yet that is not al­ways the case. Mentioning harrowing mishaps in the history of the American atomic arsenal, Schlosser singles out one for detailed dramat­ization, the explosion in 1980 of a Titan II missile. Some airmen were killed and injured, but since the warhead didn’t detonate, the safety sys­tem appeared to have worked. Color Schlosser skeptical, for, as he re­counts this accident, which began with a mundane incident—a dropped tool that punctured the missile—he delves into nuclear weapon designs. Those are influenced by the requirement that the bomb must always detonate when desired and never when not. Citing experts in the tech­nology of nuclear weaponry who have pondered the “never” part of the requirement, Schlosser highlights their worry about an accidental nucle­ar explosion. Underscored by cases of dropped, burned, and lost bombs, the problem of designing a safe but reliable bomb persists (see also The Bomb, 2009, by weapons engineer Stephen Younger). Well re­searched, reported, and written, this contribution to the nucle­ar-weapons literature demonstrates the versatility of Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away Rebecca Goldstein

At the heart of the latest work from acclaimed philosopher and novel­ist Rebecca Newberger Goldstein lies one question: is philosophy ob­solete? If it were possible today, I would change my religion and would joyfully embrace poetic paganism,” wrote the Armenian poet Daniel Varuzhan in 1908. During the seven years that remained in his life, he wrote largely in this “pagan” vein. If it was an artistic endeavour, why then should art be defined in reference to religion? And which religion precisely? Was Varuzhan echoing Schelling’s Philosophy of Art?

Mourning Philology draws on Varuzhan and his work to present a his­tory of the national imagination, which is also a history of national philo­logy, as a reaction to the two main philological inventions of the nine­teenth century: mythological religion and the native. In its first part, the book thus gives an account of the successive stages of orientalist philo­logy. Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4. Osmo Vänskä (conductor), Minnesota Orchestra

Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä recorded this exact pair of Sibelius symphonies for the BIS label in 1996, with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and this 2013 release with the Minnesota Orchestra is recognizably the work of the same artist. However, he has not simply repeated the earlier performance with a new ensemble. The biggest differences come in the Symphony No. 4 in A minor, Op. 63, which Sibelius wrote after a cancer diagnosis, convinced that he was at death's door. (He lived another 50 years.) The unbelievably dour finale is sometimes given over to histrionic declarations of gloom. Vänskä shaves almost a minute off the already quick earlier performance, resulting in a reading that some will find slightly dry. But really he just lets the music speak for itself, the Minnesota's trombones cutting off phrases like anvils of death, the cyclical appearance of the tritone interval in the work emerging naturally in the precise work of the Minnesotans (who for all the talk of Finnish musical miracles are at least the equals of their Lahti counterparts) and doing the job of convincing the listener of the music's utter hopelessness

They've been making me smile and shiver for two decades now.
