Life & Breath – Choral Works By René Clausen. Charles Bruffy, conductor
Clausen's music is freewheeling, tonal, slightly eclectic, and beautifully wedded to the texts he chooses…His melodies are exceptionally expressive while his harmonies perfectly support the communicative abilities of his intentions.
This well-selected collection highlights his career from early to more recent, including such stellar 'hits' as the opening All that Hath Life and Breath Praise ye the Lord. . .
Clausen has been especially successful in writing music according to the abilities of his ensembles, which makes The Tyger and The Lamb all the more exciting for their ability to conjure emotion while using the simplest of means. I found the Magnificat maybe the most melodically alluring while the more daring harmonics of O vos omnes are highly moving.

Kurtág & Ligeti: Music For Viola. Kim Kashkashian
Kim Kashkashian has long been one of the most outstanding protagonists of modern composition and this bold and subtle account of solo music by the great Hungarian composers Kurtag and Ligeti is a landmark recording. Kurtags Signs Games and Messages (1989- in progress) in its nineteen aphoristic sections is as demanding as Ligetis Sonata for viola (1991-94), but Kashkashian surmounts the very different challenges of both works, and points towards the qualities that unite these composers. As ever, she gets to the heart of the music, and unravels its secrets.
György Kurtág (b. 1926) and György Ligeti (1923-2006) were friends, for more than sixty years. “For a long time, a lifetime, Ligeti led me onward,” said Kurtág. “I followed him—sometimes right behind him and other times years or even decades later. I call it my ‘Imitatio Christi’ syndrome. The first years of our friendship were marked not only by his intellectual leadership. I oriented my taste according to his example.”

Victoria: Tenebrae Responsories. Tenebrae, Nigel Short
Tenebrae return to the sublime music of Tomás Luis de Victoria on Signum with this recording of his timeless Tenebrae Responsories. The works mix the words of the Gospels with other texts commenting on collective suffering written around the 4th century, and would traditionally have been performed as part of a moving service in which candles are slowly extinguished to mark the progress and suffering of Christ that forms the Passion story.
“this recording is the most nuanced and telling available. First there is the sheer sound of the ensemble: beautifully balanced and tuned with, at times (Caligaverunt oculi), an almost glassy perfection. Next there is an exceptional awareness of the different narrative voices...Finally there is the seamless, architectural line...This really is excellent.” BBC Music Magazine

Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea
Sonya Yoncheva (Poppée), Max Emanuel Cencic (Néron), Ann Hallenberg (Octavie), Tim Mead (Othon), Paul Whelan (Sénèque) & Amel Brahim-Djelloul (Drusilla)
Le Concert d'Astrée, Emmanuelle Haïm (conductor) & Jean-François Sivadier (stage director)
One Roman emperor is not enough for conductor Emmanuelle Haïm. After Julius Caesar in Handel’s opera –recorded for Virgin Classics DVD at Paris’ Palais Garnier with Lawrence Zazzo as Giulio Cesare and Natalie Dessay as Cleopatra – she now brings a ruler of less illustrious reputation: Nero (Nerone) in Monteverdi’s sensuous and cruel story of love, ambition and politics, L’incoronazione di Poppea.
This production, recorded in 2012 at the exquisite opera house in Lille, is by the French director Jean-François Sivadier; he was also responsible for La traviata in 2011 at Aix-en-Provence, a staging which starred Natalie Dessay.
As the French newspaper Les Échos wrote: “The excitement, the passions, the impulses and the hatred to be found in this Shakespearean story are all the more intense [for the sobriety of Sivadier’s approach]. Sonya Yoncheva has no trouble seducing both Nerone and the audience, thanks to her voluptuous roundness of voice and physique. A feline lover, she knows how to flash her claws when she wishes to depose her rival Ottavia, the unhappy woman who, in Ann Hallenberg, finds an interpreter as superb for the nobility of her singing as for her expressions of sorrow ... Max Emanuel Cencic portrays a Nerone who is in thrall to his senses while remaining the pitiless master of his court. Emmanuel Haïm takes the colours and dramatic nuances proffered by her ensemble, Le Concert d’Astrée, and distributes them to fine effect. She takes an active role in Monteverdi’s triumph.” Classica magazine, meanwhile, wrote that: “Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d’Astrée, in fine form, breathe amorously hot and cold over Jean-François Sivadier’s intelligent production, which, typically, favours living beings over decor.”

Byzantium and Islam. Age of Transition. Edited by Helen C. Evans with Brandie Ratliff
This groundbreaking volume explores the epochal transformations and unexpected continuities in the Byzantine Empire from the seventh to the ninth century. As the period opened, the Empire's southern provinces—the vibrant, diverse areas of North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean—were at the crossroads of trade routes reaching from Spain to China. These regions experienced historic upheavals when their Christian and Jewish communities encountered the emerging Islamic world, and by the ninth century, an unprecedented cross-fertilization of cultures had taken place.
This extraordinary age is brought vividly to life by leading international scholars, their writings accompanied by sumptuous illustrations of the period's most notable arts and artifacts. Resplendent images of authority, religion, and trade—embodied in precious metals, brilliant textiles, fine ivories, elaborate mosaics, manuscripts, and icons, many of them never before published—highlight the dynamic dialogue between the rich array of Byzantine styles and the evolving Islamic aesthetic. With its masterful exploration of two centuries that would shape the emerging medieval world, Byzantium and Islam provides a revelatory interpretation of a period with profound ramifications for the modern era.
World Book Award in the field of Islamic Studies, given by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Uncharted: Big Data as a Lens on Human Culture. Erez Aiden

Son of the Olive Merchant: In Search of the Armenian Genocide. Anna Zeitindjioglou, Mathieu Zeitindjioglou
For their honeymoon, Anna and Mathieu traveled to Turkey with their camera in hand to learn about Mathieu s Armenian heritage and to learn what modern day Turks think about the Armenian Genocide that occurred in 1915. Sadly, Turkey denies the Genocide for a variety of reasons including that the crimes were actually committed by Armenians against the Turks. Using footage from their trip mixed with interviews, news footage, historical documents and animation, this documentary emerges into one of the most powerful films ever made about the Armenian Genocide.

Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture. Mark Richard Smith
The first feature-length documentary about the revolutionary and brilliant Chicago architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924). Known by historians as the 'father of the skyscraper' and creator of the iconic phrase 'form follows function,' Sullivan was on top of his profession in 1890. Then a series of setbacks plunged him into destitute obscurity from which he never fully recovered. Yet his persistent belief in the power of his ideas created some of America's most beautiful buildings ever created, and inspired Sullivan's protégé, Frank Lloyd Wright, to fulfill his own dream of a truly American style of architecture. Magnificent footage of surviving Sullivan buildings combined with thoughtful insight by Sullivan scholars and great storytelling, this award-winning film has won approval from architects, educators and critics.

Van Gogh. Maurice Pialat
One of the greatest films by one of the finest directors of the second half of the 20th century, Maurice Pialat’s Van Gogh represents an ambitious and crowning achievement in its portrayal of the master painter’s final weeks of life, almost exactly one-hundred years earlier.
Van Gogh, depicted by the remarkable actor/songwriter-singer Jacques Dutronc (Godard’s Sauve qui peut (la vie)), has arrived at Auvers-sur-Oise to come under the care of Dr. Gachet (Gérard Séty) for his nervous agitation. Soon after the arrival of Vincent’s brother Théo (Bernard Le Coq) and his wife, plein air portraiture and conviviality give way to the more crepuscular moods of brothels and cabarets, and the painter’s anguished existence, tossing between money worries and an impassioned relationship with the doctor’s teenage daughter, finally meets its terminal scene.
Palme d'Or, other 2 wins & 12 nominations

Herb & Dorothy. Megumi Sasaki
Herb and Dorothy Vogel redefine what it means to be an art collector.
The film tells the story of two middle-class collectors of contemporary art, Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, and the enormous and valuable collection of conceptual art and minimalist art they amassed in spite of their relatively meager salaries as New York City civil servants.

PENDERECKI, K.: Fonogrammi / Horn Concerto / Partita / The Awakening of Jacob / Anaklasis / De natura sonoris No. 1. Warsaw Philharmonic, Wit
Each of these six orchestral works bears the imprint of Penderecki’s greatness as a composer. Fonogrammi alternates piquant sonorities, pulsating vehemence and moments of great intimacy. Intensity accompanied by neo-Romantic elements can be heard in The Awakening of Jacob whilst Anaklasis is a stunning example of juxtaposed, multiple sound patterns. De natura sonoris I explores more improvisational, jazz-influenced areas, as does the richly orchestrated Partita. The Horn Concerto, composed in 2008, offers an evocative landscape, glacial, powerful, yet wistful.

Darkness visible - Nocturne for Orchestra after Milton/Pessoa. Benet Casablancas

Stravinsky & Prokofiev: Violin Concertos. Patricia Kopatchinskaja (violin), London Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Jurowski
Gramophone and BBC Award-winner Patricia Kopatchinskaja records exclusively for Naïve. Releases to date have included Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Philippe Herreweghe, a CD entitled 'Rapsodia' which explores the roots of George Enescu’s music with examples of Moldovan and Romanian folk music. Her most recent release was an all-Hungarian disc featuring concertos by Bartók, Ligeti and Eötvös which has won the concerto category in the Gramophone Awards 2013.
The two violin concertos coupled on this recording display as many affinities as they do divergences. Both stem from creators in conflict with their native Russia – one choosing to return there, the other settling permanently in exile; both belong to the aesthetic of the ‘return to order’ observed from 1920 onwards and characterised by the reappropriation of models from the past. If Prokofiev preserves the traditional bases of the concerto, he combines them with a search for a new lyricism. As for Stravinsky, he reworks tried and trusted models while offering a deliberately neutral, distanced expressivity.

Saint-Saëns: La Muse et le Poète. Gautier Capuçon (cello), Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Lionel Bringuier
Violinist Renaud Capuçon and his cellist brother Gautier are joined by the young French conductor Lionel Bringuier and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France for a programme of works by Camille Saint-Saëns. It includes the lyrical, intimate and rarely heard ‘Duet for Violin, Cello and Orchestra’, La Muse et le Poète.
For this recording of three concertante works by Saint-Saëns they are joined by another leading French musician of the younger generation, the conductor Lionel Bringuier, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Though only 27, Bringuier will become Chief Conductor and Music Director of Zurich’s much-respected Tonhalle Orchestra in 2014. He recently completed six seasons as Resident Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he worked with music directors Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel. It was as a 14-year-old student that he first got to know Renaud Capuçon and this Saint-Saëns disc first began to take shape three or so years ago.
Recorded in Paris at the Salle Pleyel and the Théâtre du Châtelet, it comprises Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No 3, Cello Concerto No 1 and ‘Duet for Violin, Cello and Orchestra’, La Muse et le Poète – a work that the Capuçon brothers had never played before and which is only rarely heard.
