Mass Flourishing: How Grassroots Innovation Created Jobs, Challenge, and Change. Edmund Phelps

In this book, Nobel Prize-winning economist Edmund Phelps draws on a lifetime of thinking to make a sweeping new argument about what makes nations prosper--and why the sources of that prosperity are un­der threat today. Why did prosperity explode in some nations between the 1820s and 1960s, creating not just unprecedented material wealth but "flourishing"--meaningful work, self-expression, and personal growth for more people than ever before? Phelps makes the case that the well­spring of this flourishing was modern values such as the desire to cre­ate, explore, and meet challenges. These values fueled the grassroots dy­namism that was necessary for widespread, indigenous innovation. Most innovation wasn't driven by a few isolated visionaries like Henry Ford and Steve Jobs; rather, it was driven by millions of people em­powered to think of, develop, and market innumerable new products and processes, and improvements to existing ones. Mass flourishing--a combination of material well-being and the "good life" in a broader sense--was created by this mass innovation.

The book covers past mass extinctions and demonstrates that the earth and humans are in the midst of a "sixth" mass extinction. She chronicles previous mass species extinction events, as well as specif­ic species extinguished by humans thousands of years ago, centuries ago, such as the great auk; and she includes the accelerated wide­spread extinction of many species during our present time. Kolbert also describes prehistoric and historic ecologies surrounding prior and near-present species extinguishing events.

This report analyses the structures and organisation of school evaluation in primary and compulsory secondary level. It covers all EU Member States, as well as Iceland, Norway, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey. Schools form the basic building blocks of education and training systems, and school evaluation is an important way to monitor and improve their quality, as well as to enhance the quality of education at large. The report analyses the two major types of school evaluation: external evaluation, conducted by evaluators who are not staff members of the school concerned, and internal evaluation, performed primarily by members of its staff. The report contains country-specific descriptions and a comparative review of school evaluation in Europe.

Tackling early leaving from education and training in Europe: Strategies, policies and measures. European Commission thematic report

This joint Eurydice/Cedefop report sheds light on early leaving from education and training – a serious challenge in many EU countries. The report aims to add value to Member States' individual efforts as well as to the European Commission's endeavours in this area by monitoring developments in the design and implementation of strategies, policies and measures to combat early leaving and support student learning. Key areas addressed are: data collection, strategies and policies against early leaving, the role of education and career guidance, governance and cross-sector cooperation and early leaving from the perspective of vocational education and training. All EU Members States are covered as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.

Financing Schools in Europe: Mechanisms, Methods and Criteria in Public Funding. European Commission thematic report

This report provides a framework for understanding the structure of funding systems of primary and general secondary education. It delivers an analysis of authority levels involved and the methods and criteria used for determining the level of resources for financing school education. It covers 27 of the 28 EU Member States as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Turkey. The authority levels involved in the transfers and provision of school funding is inextricably linked to the political and administrative set-up in individual countries themselves. With the help of national diagrams on funding flows, the report explains the different mechanisms, methods and priorities when it comes to funding staff, operational goods and services and capital goods.

Modernisation of Higher Education in Europe: Access, Retention and Employability. European Commission thematic report

The development of quality mass higher education systems is high on the policy agendas at both national and European levels. An increasing number of European citizens require high level knowledge, skills and competences to expand the knowledge-base and foster innovation and progress. Thus, higher education systems in Europe should be designed to respond and adapt to the needs of our increasingly knowledge-based economy and societies. To support evidence-based policy making, this Eurydice report sheds light on current national and institutional policies and practices aimed at increasing and widening access, reducing student dropout, and improving the employability of higher education graduates in Europe. The report covers 36 European countries and education systems and consolidates information from three different sources: Eurydice national units, national quality assurance agencies and site visits to higher education institutions.

Монография посвящена анализу эстетических взглядов и пред­ставлений одного из крупнейших отцов Церкви Блаженного Авре­лия Августина (354—430). Simindis kundzuli. George Ovashvili

Every year the Enguri River drops to reveal small fertile islands. Because the river marks the natural border that separates Georgia from Abkhazia, these islands are unclaimed territory. Peasants come every year to live on them during the growing season, attempting to harvest enough corn to survive the winter. Two problems face them; the fact that the two nations have been in some form of conflict since the 90's and the rising waters of the Enguri.

Clearly influenced by the likes of Dreyer and Bela Tarr, Director George Ovashvili's slow-burning, minimalist thriller takes place entirely on and around one of these tiny islands. We follow an old man, referred to only as Grandpa, and his grand-daughter as they methodically bring supplies to the island and construct a small shack. They will have to live on this island in order to tend to and protect their little patch of corn.

The river creates and the river destroys. The island is a microcosm of man against nature, of the political instability of the region and of life itself. The amount Corn Island is able to achieve with so little is commendable.

In the Footsteps of Tchouhadjian. Ara Shirinian, Mesut Tufan

The Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation is proud to present the documentary short ‘In the Footsteps of Tchouhadjian’. This Armenian-Turkish co-production is co-directed by Mesut Yasar Tufan and Ara Shirinian. The documentary short traces the life and art of Dikran Tchouhadjian, the famous Armenian composer from Istanbul. The composer was praised as the forerunner of classical music in the Near East, introducing European classical traditions into the Ottoman scene.The documentary short focuses on the opera “Leblebici Horhor Ağa,” written in Turkish by Tchouhadjian, and the opera scene in 19th century Istanbul. The film highlights the long tradition of music intertwining artists from the Turkish and Armenian communities.

As an important part of the IHJR’s work relating to the Turkey-Armenia region we are pleased to note that Mesut Tufan has recently presented the film to the Armenia Turkey Cinema Platform during the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival in July of 2014. The documentary short is meant to set a positive example to spur further cooperation between the countries, as well as to show that art can normalize relations and be a precursor to intercultural dialogue. By exploring Tchouhadjian’s legacy as an example of a shared cultural heritage for both Armenians and Turks, the documentary aims at fostering a better understanding among the two nations on their common past.

Awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Music and described by the New Yorker’s Alex Ross as “...the loveliest apocalypse in mu­sical history”, John Luther Adams’ majestic orchestral work Be­come Ocean is a thrilling exploration of depth, turbulence, eerie silence and ultimately enveloping calm. Performed by the Seattle Symphony under the baton of Ludovic Morlot, the music casts an expressive arc that’s by turns intimate and expansive - an ebbing and flowing sonic jour­ney that finds the composer testing the very limits of his imagina­tion.

“The title is stolen from John Cage”, Adams reveals, “from a little mesostic poem that he wrote in honor of Lou Harrison. He compares Lou’s music to a river in delta, with all these different influences and currents, coming together in a big beautiful sweep of music. And in the last line of the poem, Cage writes, ‘Listening to it, we become ocean.’ I’ve always been struck by what a beautiful image that is.”

Invisible Cities. Christopher Cerrone

Christopher Cerrone’s widely acclaimed opera, INVISIBLE CIT­IES, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Music, is now available as a studio recording produced, engineered, mastered, and mixed by Nick Tipp. The recording is released by The Industry, LA’s home for new and experimental opera, on its new independent record label, The Industry Records.

Adapted from Italo Calvino’s 1972 fantastical novel, Cerrone’s delicate, quiet score explores sonic qualities of decay and lush­ness with a haunting simplicity through the use of found objects as instruments and pre-recorded voices interweaving with live voices. The opera imagines a meeting of the emperor Kublai Khan at the end of his life with the explorer Marco Polo. And the story depicts a host of fantastical cities that the explorer Marco Polo narrates to Kublai Khan: unreal cities of desire, of memory, of the imagination and mind.

Ральф Воан-Вильямс: Симфонии №№ 1-9

Имя этого английского композитора пока еще мало­известно российскому слушателю. А между тем, Во­ан-Уильямс был один из крупнейших фигур так назы­ваемого «Английского музыкального Возрождения» - движения, возникшего в Великобритании на рубеже XIX и XX вв.  Вобрав в себя широкий спектр источни­ков, претво­ренных в авторском стиле Воан-Уильямса (от ста­ринных народных песен и религиозных гимнов до му­зыкального импрессионизма и джаза), его сим­фонии отличаются яркой образностью, мелодиче­ской изоб­ретательностью, они «открыты» и доступны любому чуткому слушателю. «Музыка должна быть обраще­на ко всем, хоть и не всеми будет принята», - гово­рил композитор.
Записи симфоний Воан-Уильямса в исполнении вы­дающегося дирижера, признанного мастера интер­претации музыки ХХ века Геннадия Рождественского были осуществлены на концертах в Ленинграде в 1988-89 гг.

Обраба­тывая церковные мелодии, Комитас хотел вернуть их первозданность, самобытность и простоту, освобо­дить их от различных наслоений,возникших за много веков. С этой целью Комитас обращался к сельским священникам, которые исполняли эти мелодии со­гласно традициям. Свободное применение полифо­нических принципов, знание специфики хорового ис­кусства, способность средствами полифонии макси­мально правдиво и выразительно воспроизвести на­циональный характер армянской церковной музыки – благодаря всему этому Комитас создал произведе­ние высочайшей ценности.
