His suicide in 1948 still echoes and disturbs the family’s relationships. While Mougouch, looks back at her time with Gorky, their daughters, Maro and Natasha, revisit painful childhood memories. Gorky was an elusive character who escaped the Armenian genocide and reinvented himself as a romantic artist in New York in the 30s. He struggled as a painter until he found in Mougouch the emotional support he needed to flourish. Their relationship was passionate and inspiring to begin with, but the pressure of two small children and no money soon put a huge train on them. In 1947 he was struck by a series of tragedies that led to suicide. This film takes you through the pain and courage of the family, coming to an emotional climax in Gorky's birthplace: Lake Van, former Armenia.

The documentary PORTRAIT OF WALLY traces the history of this iconic image – from Schiele’s gesture of affection toward his young lover, to the theft of the painting from Lea Bondi, a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion and subterfuge that evoke THE THIRD MAN, to the surprise resurfacing of “Wally” on loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan in 1997.

In 1997, when the heirs of art dealer Lea Bondi asked MoMA to hold the painting in New York, MoMA and the Leopold Museum dug in their heels and refused. District Attorney Robert Morgenthau issued a subpoena and launched a criminal investigation. A 13-year battle in court followed, tracking the course of a Holocaust property crime and reopening the wounds of one of the century’s worst tragedies – all at a time when the prices of Egon Schiele’s works rose faster than those of any painter on the art market.

Schiele collector Ronald Lauder found himself caught between several loyalties – he was chairman of MoMA and the founder of the Commission for Art Recovery, an organization committed to returning looted art to the Jews who lost it to the Nazis. Lauder sided with the Museum, and against the Jewish family. So did all the museums in New York – even the Jewish Museum.

The “Wally” case brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, eventually forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to search their own collections for suspect objects. Many museums ended up returning art to Jewish families who had abandoned hope until “Wally” showed that institutions could be held accountable for holding property stolen during the Holocaust. The case was resolved in dramatic fashion in the summer of 2010, but only after the history of Schiele’s extraordinary painting was unearthed to revisit the crimes of the Holocaust and to witness the reluctance of major institutions in Europe and New York to send the “last prisoners of war” back to their families.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No. 1. Daniil Trifonov, Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev

Daniil Trifonov, winner of the XIVth International Tchaikovsky Competition, is probably the world’s most exciting young pianist. On his first Mariinsky recording he joins Valery Gergiev for a scintillating performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1. Daniil also presents a selection of recital repertoire including music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt transcriptions of Schubert and Schumann.

Written for Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works. Revised three times, including an arrangement for two pianos, the concerto was finally set in stone in 1888 and it is this version that is most frequently performed today. Tchaikovsky balances core motivic elements with a sense of lyrical spontaneity to create a technically challenging but instantly appealing work.

At only 21 years old, Daniil Trifonov has won countless awards, including the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, the Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (Gold Medal). Valery Gergiev personally awarded Trifonov the ‘Grand Prix’ in Moscow, an additional award given to the best overall competitor in any category of the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

In 2011, Trifonov gave his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra and has since performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Mariinsky Orchestra, as well as touring throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East. In the coming season he will make debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Chicago Symphony orchestras, as well as performing recitals at Salle Pleyel, Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall and Wigmore Hall.

The piano has always been (and to a large extent still is), the favourite instrument of composers. The relationship that composers have with the keys of the piano (usually on a daily basis), is more intimate than the creator of music has with any other instrument. The pianist-composer nevertheless seems to be a thing of the past for it is rare these days to find composers committed exclusively by choice to solo piano music in the same way as Chopin, Schumann, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, or (in terms more relevant to the music here), Granados, Albéniz or Mompou. Yet the piano retains its attraction for many composers both as a fascinating musical entity and as an instrument representing a rich tradition and repertoire and, moreover, a treasure trove of still untapped potential.
Over recent years, Benet Casablancas, born in Sabadell, near Barcelona, has established a position as one of the most prolific and interesting composers of the present time. His secure musical and humanist education has enabled him to develop a very individual style which, though firmly based on a knowledge and love of the great classical tradition (with the Second Viennese School being one of his fundamental reference points), is open to extremely diverse influences which he is able to honour without resorting to eclectic compromises.

Rivers to the Sea. Joseph Phibbs

"With Mahler's mighty Second Symphony, the 'Resurrection', guaranteeing a full house, the composer whose new work preceded it was also fortunate in being able to write for vast orchestral forces. Now in his mid-30s, Joseph Phibbs, whose 25-minute Rivers to the Sea had its London premiere in this Philharmonia programme conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, seized his opportunity.

A continuous work in four movements, it takes its title from a poem by the American writer Sara Teasdale. Phibbs himself describes the presence of the sea as a driving force behind the piece. Certainly, its plasticity and flow suggest some ongoing continuum in motion, rising to frenetic activity in the fast sequences – Phibbs sees the last as an urban landscape – while more soberly atmospheric in the two slow sections.

What impresses throughout is the accomplishment of the harmonic and orchestral writing, both utilising a layering technique where more than one thematic element is heard over and against another. Институт ЮНЕСКО по информационным технологиям в образован­ии и издательство «Весь Мир» выпустили в свет Обзор сцена­риев применения мультимедийных средств в образовании (на ан­глийском языке).

Это новое издание книги, подготовленной международными экс­пертами – Бентом Андресеном (Университет Образования, Да­ния) и Катей ван ден Бринк (Университет Ландау, Германия) – и первоначально выпущенной ИИТО ЮНЕСКО в 2001 году. Курри­кулум представляет собой структурированный и систематический обзор педагогических сценариев применения мультимедиа средств в образовании, включая описание различных аспектов оценки знаний и умений методом портфолио, роли конечных пользователей мультимедиа продукции, самого процесса произ­водства мультимедиа, а также практики использования мультимед­иа в обучении.

Более четверти века он работал отдельно от современного ему искусства, которое без него, тем не менее, не смогло бы стать та­ким, каким стало.

Сутин не вошел ни в одну «национальную историю искусства», оставаясь пришельцем во Франции и сохраняя связь с русской культурой лишь в потаенной глубине своего творчества, которое более принадлежало Времени — XX веку, чем Месту, где оно взрастало. Художник развивал важнейшую тенденцию искусства XX века, ведущую начало еще от Бодлера: эстетизацию всего, не зависящую от предмета, скорее, даже вопреки ему.

Ощущение жизни как страдания, а живописи — как пути к его преодолению — навсегда останется доминантой его творчества. Он умер во время Второй мировой войны. Среди немногих, кто провожал Сутина на Монпарнасском кладбище, был Пикассо.

Часть 2: Правовое саморегулирование

Однозначность предписаний танского уголовного права и их под­чиненность нормам традиционной этики дают уникальную воз­можность сопоставления этических норм того времени, поскольку тяжесть наказания служит единицей измерения важности мо­ральной нормы. Исследование права, таким образом, неизбежно оказывается исследованием культуры. Описываются виды зако­нодательных актов тогдашнего Китая, их динамика и иерархия, их взаимосвязь и области их применения.

Во втором разделе исследуется отношение уголовного права к чиновной элите. Подробно анализируются специфические нормы танского уголовного права, либо применявшиеся исключительно к служилому сословию, либо модифицировавшие применительно к нему общие нормы права тогдашнего Китая.

Найдя искомую могилу, компания возвращается на армянскую сторону, где находят и отдают почести могиле сына встреченного ими азербайджанца

It's not too hard to see the point being made about in Philip Glass's new opera based on the last days of Walt Disney. The irony is hammered home repeatedly and with no great subtlety in either the libretto or the musical arrangements. Walt Disney is depicted in The Perfect American as a megalomaniac who not only took the credit for the hard work and talent of others, but he treated them appallingly as well. The latter sequences at least allow director Phelim McDermott and designer Dan Potra a bit more freedom to experiment with the staging which, even without having recourse any actual representa­tions of Disney characters, is impressive and colourful throughout. The cast and performances are also exceptionally good. Despite the deficiencies of the libretto, Christopher Purves and the rest of the cast (in particular Zachary James as Abe Lincoln and Rosie Lomas as Lucy/Josh) manage to inject some personality into their characters and even some sense of melody into the singing. The staging is im­pressive and it's well filmed, the HD image capturing the wonderful colour and lighting of the production.

He introduced numerous innovations, not least the sheer scale of the project – typically a complete performance will last in excess of 15 hours, spread over four evenings. No other opera matches the scale or ambition of the Ring.

The Mariinsky Theatre has close connections with Wagner and his music. The composer conducted at the theatre and was even offered the post of Music Director. It is also believed to be the first place where any of the music from the Ring was performed.
